My Dog Has Separation Anxiety, What Do I Do?

Back to life, back to reality we go in a post-COVID world. Now that the majority of the U.S. population are vaccinated and Pfizer is officially FDA approved, the bulk of us are returning to a pre-COVID state. Schools are re-opening, as are offices, and lots of festivities that have been on hold for the past year or so, are now up and running once more.

The bulk of us are trying to return to a sense of normalcy, including traveling and visiting friends and family. With this, however, comes the question; What about Fido? Our pups have gotten so used to us all working from home and being surrounded by the entire family 24/7, and now they’ll be home alone? It’s natural, and expected, for our dogs to have formed some type of separation anxiety at this point, so how do we help them cope?

Prepare Fido Ahead of Time

The key to adapting our pooch to any upcoming change is preparation and consistency. As we return to normalcy, schedules will change and will become more regular. It’s imperative that as we adjust, we give our pups time to adjust too.

Try and ease your dog into their new schedule. This pertains to their meals, playtime, walks, and everything else in between! Always walk Fido before leaving home, so they will be at ease once they are left alone.

If your pooch needs time to adjust to you being away, start with 5-minute intervals, and slowly work your way up to 20 minutes apart until they are alright with being left alone. Say goodbye to your pup long before you leave, this way before leaving, the no-touch, no talk, and no eye contact rule is easier to follow.

Give Yourself Peace of Mind

If you are concerned about your dog’s behavior while you are away from home, it is a great idea to crate train them. In modern times, we now have options, consisting of dog pens. These offer your pup a haven when you aren’t around, putting both of you at ease.

Oftentimes, leaving the television on or having an audiobook playing while you’re away will give your pooch the sense that someone else is there. It will also help distract them from hearing any exterior noises. Don’t leave Fido in the dark either, leave the light on!

Another option that many dog owners enjoy is nanny cams. There are various types for every budget, allowing you to check in on your pooch while you’re at the office. We live in modern times, no need to stress. Modern problems call for modern solutions!
